When you work with a financial advisor, two different jobs are taking place. Someone is helping guide your financial plan, and a financial institution is providing the infrastructure where your investment accounts are maintained.
At Prime Wealth Advisors, we believe clients should understand both. For retirees in Sun City West and the surrounding West Valley, Prime Wealth provides the local planning and management relationship, while Charles Schwab and BNY Pershing provide custody and account services. Each organization has a different role, and understanding those roles is an important part of making informed financial decisions.
What Does It Mean When an Investment Account Is “Custodied”?
Custody refers to the institution responsible for maintaining an investment account and its assets. That institution provides much of the infrastructure behind the scenes, including account records, statements, transaction processing and other operational services.
Charles Schwab provides custody, trading and operational services for independent investment advisors and their clients. BNY Pershing provides clearing, custody, trading, settlement, reporting and related services to financial firms.
In plain English, these institutions provide the account platform. Prime Wealth Advisors helps clients determine how the money within those accounts fits into a broader retirement strategy.

Who Are Charles Schwab and BNY Pershing?
Charles Schwab and BNY Pershing are established financial-services companies that provide account and custody services used throughout the financial industry. Prime Wealth Advisors chooses to maintain custody relationships with firms such as these as part of the infrastructure used to serve clients.
BNY Pershing is part of BNY, The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation. Pershing provides clearing, custody and related financial infrastructure to wealth-management organizations.
These relationships do not mean Schwab or BNY Pershing owns, endorses or replaces Prime Wealth Advisors. They have different responsibilities within the client relationship. Explaining that distinction is not about name-dropping. It is about transparency.
What Does Prime Wealth Advisors Do?
Prime Wealth Advisors helps clients coordinate the financial decisions surrounding those accounts. That includes wealth management along with tax planning and estate law considerations.
That coordination becomes especially important in retirement. A withdrawal may affect taxable income. A Roth conversion can create a tax consequence. Beneficiary choices may affect an estate plan. Required minimum distributions can influence both income and taxes.
These decisions do not exist in separate boxes, which is why Prime Wealth approaches them as parts of the same financial picture.
Why Does This Matter More in Retirement?
Retirement changes the job your money has to do. Assets that were accumulated during working years may now need to provide income, address taxes, support a surviving spouse and eventually transfer to heirs or charities.
That creates questions that go well beyond investment performance. How much should you withdraw? How could those withdrawals affect taxes? Are beneficiary forms current? Does the estate plan still match the financial accounts? Would a spouse know what to do if something happened to the person who normally handles the finances?
Knowing where an account is maintained is important. Understanding how that account fits into the rest of your retirement plan is equally important.
Why Do the Professionals Behind the Plan Matter?
Retirement decisions often cross financial, tax and legal boundaries. Prime Wealth Advisors brings professionals with different areas of experience into that conversation.
Orion Willis, ChFC®, CLU®, brings more than 25 years of financial-planning experience. Cliff S. Farmer leads the firm’s tax-planning work through Prime Wealth Accounting. Dennis Caufield brings decades of estate and elder law experience. Their specialties are different because the questions clients face are different.
An investment decision can create a tax question. A tax decision may affect an estate strategy. An estate decision may change how accounts should be titled or who should be named as beneficiary. Bringing those disciplines together helps clients look at the plan as a whole rather than carrying separate pieces from one office to another.

Does Custody Mean Your Investments Are Guaranteed?
No. Custody does not guarantee investment performance or eliminate market risk. Investment values can rise or fall regardless of which institution maintains the account.
Custody provides the account infrastructure, recordkeeping and operational framework. It should not be confused with protection against investment losses. SIPC protection is also limited: it may apply when cash or securities are missing following the failure of a SIPC-member brokerage firm, but it does not protect investors from declines in market value.

How Does Prime Wealth Bring the Pieces Together?
Prime Wealth Advisors provides the local planning relationship while Charles Schwab and BNY Pershing provide important custody and account infrastructure. The roles are different, but understanding how they fit together gives clients a clearer picture of how their financial life is organized.
For retirees in Sun City West and the West Valley, that transparency matters. You should know where your investment accounts are maintained. You should also know who is helping determine what those accounts are designed to accomplish.
Because where your money lives matters.
So does the plan behind it.
